Gabriella also sent us her thoughts on the Paraiba tourmaline mines in Mozambique:
“The Paraiba tourmaline mines in Mozambique are a place of extraordinary beauty and significance. Discovered more recently than their Brazilian counterparts, Mozambican Paraiba tourmalines have quickly gained legendary status due to their vibrant, neon blue-green color, which seems to glow from within. Paraiba tourmalines’ rarity and unique color make them highly sought after, and their discovery has made them some of the most coveted gemstones for collectors and designers alike.
“What excites me about the Paraiba mines in Mozambique is not just the stunning gems they produce but the story and the people behind these gems. Cuprian & Co. works tirelessly to uncover these treasures and is truly inspiring. Their expertise and passion for their work are the foundation of the entire operation. Working closely with the communities at source, which includes 90% of their employees being from the community, their commitment and resilience add depth and meaning to every gemstone that emerges from the earth.
“The Designer collaboration project is special to me because it combines my love for gemstones with my passion for supporting and showcasing talented designers. Paraiba tourmalines are having a moment right now, and it’s been a pleasure and an honor to put together a new collaboration highlighting this fabulous gemstone for a mining company that is so passionate about what they do. By bringing together miners and designers, we’re not just creating pieces that showcase the beauty of Paraiba tourmalines, but also celebrating the craftsmanship, creativity, and community that bring these gems to life.”

Why Can’t I Have It? John Brevard Edition

I don’t know jewelry designer, artist, and architect John Brevard — but I should be on his payroll, I write about his jewelry so much. I love his designs like an elephant loves a deep, refreshing watering hole. His rings, in particular, are incredible—achieved through the magic of something called Thoscene, which he describes as “an online parametric modeling platform that utilizes biominetic structures and astrological algorithms to create unique forms (sculpture, furniture, jewelry, architectural design, etc.) inspired by the user's inputs (date, time, location of birth).” Zany! Brevard isn’t yet a household name and isn’t involved in fine jewelry’s usual trade shows, but he’s a member of the CFDA, and seemingly cannot pick one medium to work in—the guy also makes $15,000 area rugs. I’m in deep. -EV

What is Rough Cut Podcast?
We’re proud to share that Rough Cut podcast is one of the longest-running and most popular jewelry podcasts in the world. Founded by NYC Jewelry Week co-founder JB Jones and noted jewelry and style photographer Alain Simić, the podcast now functions as an independent entity with two additional co-hosts: jewelry industry journalists Amy Elliott and Emili Vesilind. It remains, as ever, a platform for showcasing the unique perspectives and personalities that make jewelry —and the jewelry industry—perennially fascinating, occasionally frustrating, but always amazing.
